Summary/Abstract: This paper studies the gesture of bowing in the “Life of the Venerable Theodosius of Kiev Caves” through the methodology of nonverbal semiotics and intertextuality. The vita was written by monk Nestor in the eleventh century. Bowing in this text is part of a gesture system characterized with ceremonial and emblematic communication between the saint and the others.
