The Slavic settlement between Istros and Haemus until the formation of the first Bulgarian kingdo

Summary/Abstract: In the Bulgarian historiography the question about the Slavic settlement between Istros and Haemus has been dominated by the culturehistorical paradigm. There is followed a model in which the logical connection between ethnogenesis, language, land of origin and migration is legitimized. Despite of the unanimity amongst scholars today many unresolved questions remain. The present text analyzes the written and archaeological material about the Slavic settlements between Istros and Haemus in the 6th–7th centuries. We criticize the universality of the Herder ideas that the language guarantees some kind of relationship and very old origin. In this situation, matching the Slavs who lived in Northern Bulgaria with the “other Slavs“ is very controversial.
