Summary/Abstract: In this paper the history of performance appraisal (PA) is presented in the context of its environment changing influence throughout the centuries, with special attention to PA change derived from its 40 year social and economic experience. Originally, PA was the main issue of interest for both supervisor and employee with PA result used mainly in administrative (i.e. salary raise, career drive) decisions. Today’s viewpoint on PA is quite different to what it was previously. Now PA is being seen as an important element of employee performance management (EPM), although there are still many complaints over the way in which the appraiser delivers feedback to the appraisee. In general, previous PA objectives and methods still exist with newly developed ones, what with the complexity of current global management makes PA a challenging task.
