Summary/Abstract: Purpose– We aimed to determine how remote management support (MS) practices and staff diversityinfluencedemployeeperformance(EP)withinthedigitalworkplace(DW)duringtheCOVID-19pandemic.Thearticle highlights the challenges managers face in achieving EP in the DW compared to traditional workenvironments.Design/methodology/approach– Wedevelopedatheoreticalmodel(MS→DW→EP)andtesteditbasedonthecomputer-assistedwebinterview(CAWI)conductedinmid-2022.Factorsofprimary,secondaryandorganizationaldiversitymoderatedtherelationshipbetweenthevariables.Wepurposelyselectedasampleof1,000respondentswithremoteworkingexperience.Findings– The results show that the DW partially mediates the relationship between MS and EP. Thegreatertheuncertaintyinmanagingpeople,themoreflexibility,trustandjobsatisfactionrequiredintheDWtoachieveEP.Organizationaldiversityinfluencedthemodelmore(i.e.teamworkvsindividualwork)thantheprimaryandsecondarydiversity(i.e.genderandeducation).Research limitations/implications– Although the sample size was large, we cannot consider itstatisticallyrepresentative.Practicalimplications– ZoomersandMillennialsreflectfullmediationinthemodelthatsupportsEP.Socialimplications– Broaderworkautonomy,smallerorganizationsandteamsaswellashybridworkarrangements,reducethenecessityforin-personmeetingswithsuperiors.Originality/value– Supervisors had to reduce control over the DW while expanding organizationalcitizenshipbehavior(OCB)toenhancejobsatisfactionandthusensuretheexpectedEPduringthepandemic.WemayconsiderallowinganemployeetopostponeworkasanewmanagerialactivitywithinMS.
