Summary/Abstract: This research studies the preference for certain dimensions of identity as a method to reduce the negative impact of threat for self-evaluation. The hypotheses assume that the task (self-relevant/non self-relevant), the feedback (positive/negative) will lead to a strategic selection of self-evaluation dimensions of identity (personal/social-ethnic). Participants are 240 students in the Medical College in Iaşi. The measures are: for the I.V.s – demographic questionnaire, esthetic judgment (non self-relevant task)/social sensitivity (self-relevant task) followed by feedback; for the D.V.s: the identity questionnaire, the self and other scale, the inclusion of other in the self scale. Tthe method is a mixed experimental design, with a 2 (task) x 2 (feedback) x 2 (sex) x 2 (identity), with the last variable within subjects. ANOVA Univariate and repeated measures showed that in self-relevant tasks, followed by negative feedback, and in non self-relevant tasks, followed by positive feedback, the participants prefer the personal identity for self-evaluation, and in the other situations they prefer the social identity. The participants feel more threatened when they receive positive feedback, particularly in non self-relevant tasks. The choice of an identity dimension for self-evaluation may depend on the group importance for the person or on group cohesiveness.
