Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to show some of the important cultural dimensions of the economic crisis that began after the start of the political transition to democracy. The use of the cultural and historical values, which have turned into rallying symbols of Bulgarian patriotism, has been revealed through the analysis of two examples: the Bulgarian Velikden (Easter, the literal translation of the religious holiday being “Great Day”) Initiative and the Rozhen 2000 All Bulgarian Folklore Gathering. These have been history, and more specifically, the National Revival Period, for the Bulgarian Easter, and folklore – for Rozhen 2000. The author’s conclusion is that each approach is in its own way both winning and losing. However the dialogue between them brings to the fore the different languages spoken by those in power and this is in itself a road to failure.
