Summary/Abstract: The Christian priesthood was founded by Jesus Christ, having its foundation in His priesthood. From the Apostles’s time, the Church hierarchy was well established, the christian clergy having an important role in the spread of Christianity. The authority of the religious leaders was based on a high moral clergy. The role of the clergy was decisive in defending Christianity and in the establishment of Church’s rulles, both in matters of faith and in terms of internal organization. We can observe the carefulness of clergy to meet in many local councils and to clarify theissues raised in the bosom of Christianity. Starting with the fourth century, the church organization has undergone major changes, taking as a model, the organization of the Roman Empire. As of this century, the number of priests has increased considerably, the work being now much more complex. By now, most provincial capitals are, in various regions of the empire, episcopal offices. The christian priest becomes an important citizen of the empire.
