Summary/Abstract: The Federal Republic of India was established almost 60 years ago. Institutional solutions used in this federation were taken from legal regulations of other democracies, pri¬marily the USA and the United Kingdom. However, as a result of many social, economic and political factors, the system in India has a specific structure and is characterized as asymmetric federalism. As a result of the preamble of India’s Constitution, the country is trying to build a democratic, sovereign, socialistic and secularized republic. The aim of this article is a presentation of institutional solutions, the development, functionality and characteristics of the local government units in India.
