The demographic situation in the Russian Federation in the years 1990-2009

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the demographic situation in Russia in the years 1990-2009, which had the symptoms of the demographic crisis. Overcoming the crisis is the most important challenge of the state policy. We analyzed the changes in population, birth rate, death rate, natural growth and life expectancy at birth. The research shows that in 2009 we could observe a slight improvement of these indicators. It did not determine permanent positive trends as short-term jumps have already taken place in the past. Cross-sectional study was conducted in the federal districts. The article also points to large differences among regions of the Russian Federation.
