Summary/Abstract: Starting from the assumption that the feeling of alienation to be found in Moby-Dick is due to the specific conditions engendered by modernity, the paper looks at Melville's novels in terms of a search for meaning involving a dialogue of the quester not only with himself but also with his society: men and women, whites and nonwhites alike.
