Summary/Abstract: This article researches the definitions (sources) of civic consciousness and citizens’ practice among young people (high-school pupils) in Croatia. In the research a complex methodology for defining the index of civic consciousness and citizens’ practice (fact analysis, etc.) was applied, and afterwards two models of analysis (structural and functional) of the sources of indicated dimensions of citizenship were applied. The research showed that there is a certain functional connectedness in all models of analysis between dimensions of consciousness and practice of youth (high-school pupils), except for demonstrations and political tolerance. It is interesting that political tolerance cannot be explained by the development of various dimensions of civic consciousness of the pupils. This could mean among young people it is developed as a modus vivendi in society, and not as a conceived understanding of the consciousness about human rights and democratic norms. It is further shown that pupils’ sex and “school education” (tasks of the education) relevantly contribute to development of dimensions of civic consciousness, but not also citizens’ practice, while pupils’ SES and “school climate” have a relevant influence on development of dimensions of citizens’ practice. This means that school conditions influence differentially the development of various dimensions of citizenship among pupils. This result explains in a certain way the perceived dilemma in literature about the influence of the school climate. It is clear that these researches should be continued and more systematically elaborate school conditions and some other structural characteristics among young people.
