Summary/Abstract: In this article the author considers question of linguistic politics of European Union, seeking to show that this question is considerably more complex than the two-polar structure in linguistic questions, by which the whole problem is reduced to conflict between two basic principles: democratic, with strong emphasis on identity-symbolical, that is cultural-historical aspects, which gives everyone equal rights and acknowledges equal value regardless of number of speakers, and functional-practical, or “market”, that is socio-economic, which reduces the number of languages and thus inevitably gives advantage to stronger and bigger. In order to indicate the fact that linguistic politics of European Union is a considerably more complex problem, the author does not limit himself only to the question of status question of language (official languages, working languages, regional languages, etc.) but also to the question of the level of communication at work within the Union itself, comparing it with the models or systems of international communication which could possibly be the exemplars to the EU system, and at the end broader worldview or political-ideological concepts connected to linguistic politics.
