About Disputable and Excentric European Identity - Cradle of Difference

Summary/Abstract: In the article the author presents culturological-philosophical originations of identity, that is, the idea of Europe. This question is, considers the author, shown as what in its system represents complexity and interconnectedness of heterogeneous historical traditions, which always redefine and reshape European identity and self-consciousness. The author shows that the essence of the European makes a peculiar synthesis of Jewish religion, Greek philosophy and science, and Christianity. For the constitution of the European spirit, Western civilization and culture, predominantly historical meaning still has the establishment of philosophy and science in Greece. In the Greek philosophy we got, considers the author, for the history of West authoritative answers to the question about the essence of a man and human community. In the last part of the article, the author considers thoughts of Croatian philosophers Franjo Markovic and Albert Bazala about the role of philosophy in constituting national identity and popular self-consciousness.
