Summary/Abstract: The paper proposes a new perspective on non-fiction research, an area in which there is some room for improvement. The existing investigations rarely take into consideration the basic problem undertaken in the present discussion: the relationship of the real and the fictitious and the more and more frequent appearance of hybrid genres which wipe out the line between fiction and non-fiction. The new approach is defined as an ethical one, investigating the breach of the referential pact, which constitutes – in the author’s opinion – the main distinctive feature of this type of writing. The discussion is illustrated with the examples drawn from four writers: Ryszard Kapuściński, Frank Westerman, Martin Pollack and Claudio Margris.
