Summary/Abstract: This article investigates the limitations of the left/right cleavage in the French Presidential elections of 2007. The main hypothesis is that, despite the appearances, the right/left cleavage was weakened by the relative convergence of the two main candidates, Nicolas Sarkozy and Ségolène Royal, over the nodal issues of national identity, citizenship and immigration.
