Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the Russian toponyms of Hilarion Karpiński Geographical Lexicon (Vilnius 1766) in the context of Russian toponyms used in Polish until 18th century and in the context of the nomenclature presented in the first Russian dictionary of geographical names by Echard-Ladvocat. The toponyms used in the latter source was slightly altered when it was rendered into Polish. It includes names which were recorded in previous centuries (by Długosz, Bielski and Stryjkowski) but also names which appeared only in the 18th century. The main characteristic of Russian geographic names still in the 18th century is its conservatism which is a consequence of consolidation of names recorded by authors of the first accounts of the Russian state (Herberstein, Olearius, Mayerberg). The revival of contacts with Moscow (and later with Russia) results not only in the increase in the number of names of items previously not recorded, but also contributes to the verification of the 18th century nomenclature.
