Summary/Abstract: The article is a description of the family of words proved by SStp and SXVI and originating from the phrase dziwic´ sie˛ (to be surprised). The starting point of the research is the old Slavonic form of the verb *diviti se˛ and its original meaning: to look with admiration, to observe, to contemplate. On the basis of quotes from sources dating up to 16th century the paper shows the relation between the concept of surprise [(z){dziwienie}] and the sense of sight and hearing. The mental aspect of being surprised is also mentioned in the article.
