Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to diagnose the role and function of the Polish language in contemporary European cultural and linguistic sphere. The starting point of the paper is the thesis on the special importance of language in culture and the conviction of mutual relationship between the socio-cultural context and language. By diagnosing the current communication and linguistic situation, the author draws attention to the image of cultural and civilisational crisis and the feeling of threat among individuals and social groups. The results of these are on the one hand phenomena known as globalisation, and strengthening of local language, ethnic and cultural communities on the other. In this context, the forecast concerning the future of Polish entails that the forced knowledge of international languages (used only for practical purposes), especially of English, may result in the impoverishment of grammatical and lexical system of Polish and in the decrease of language competence of its speakers and also in functional limitations in the usage of the Polish language.
