On Some Aspects of Dictionary Definitions

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the author is to show lexicographical weaknesses in semantic and pragmatic descriptions on the basis of dictionary entries for the Polish words prawda and doskonałość found in four monolingual dictionaries of the Polish language. The weaknesses are based on: − imprecise extraction of meanings of ambiguous words (insufficient analysis of differences manifested by grammatical features, collocations and broadly understood contexts of lexeme usage) − the lack of any forms of indicating meaning syncretism of numerous word usages − too seldom placing of information on evaluative connotations of words (or of some of their meanings).
