Anthropology of the City, Anthropology in the City: the City as a Subject and a Field of Research

Summary/Abstract: The author shows how it is increasingly difficult to describe and understand the city. This situation stems from the inability to determine what the city and the urban lifestyle is, and also validates different ways to learn about the city: through theoretical studies about a city or by the anthropology in a city. In the latter case, a city is a context to academic discussion about contemporary culture, popular culture, global culture. A city creates an important theoretical background for an analysis of different cultural phenomena and categories including: cultural identity, own and other, customs, cultural diversity, tradition and many more.
