Summary/Abstract: Kumstvo (the role of sponsor at a wedding) occupies a special place in the system of Balkan kinship relations, and Bulgarian kinship relations in particular. In principle, it belongs to the common category of symbolic kinship. The main emphasis of the study has been placed on the social relations established via kumstvo and their manifestations in the period following the Second World War. For this purpose the author has used field research in the village of Stoil Voivoda, in the vicinity of Nova Zagora (Burgas region). Proceeding from some basic research on kumstvo in the Balkan countries, the author makes an analysis of its manifestations at the wedding and at baptism among the Bulgarians under socialism and after.
