Summary/Abstract: The word "culture" was not used during the European Parliament campaign and elections. Not even during the negociations for enlargement. The article contains Jean Monnet´s words: "If we were to start everything again from the start, we should start with culture". The article states that the uniqueness of the European culture lays in the fact that there are 40 different cultures (in spite the desire of standardisation). About mass culture, the "European cultural project" and the state practices in the communist Europe before 1989.
