Summary/Abstract: The assessment of the four years of membership yields more optimistic results than expected. The expected costs and benefits are reflected in the review of these four years. In the environment of open cooperation, Polish citizens appear to have modified their understanding of their positive and negative characteristics. The signs of a legitimacy crisis have occurred to a lesser degree in the new than in the old Member States. The moral conservatism declared by the Poles is accompanied by a liberal economic attitude characterized by the striving for profit, prioritization of the respect of work, and the approval of benefits resulting from from open competition. Poles still have a negative image of their own society, which is more positively characterized by other nationalities than their own. The awareness of Poles of the European dimension has been changing and so have their expectations of Poland’s role in political and social relations. With Poland’s accession to the European Union and the activation of resources that have led to a partnership based on cooperation, her western boundaries have – formally and in the consciousness of the society – moved to the level of the river Bug.
