Summary/Abstract: The changing security environment clearly indicated already in the late 80s and early 90s that the age of mass armies with high headcount associated with the bipolar confrontation and area defence strategy is over in Europe. This has led in almost all European countries to the necessity of reducing defence spending substantially and to a significant decrease of the number of soldiers, as well as to the necessity of reforming the armed forces. The security policy expert does research on these questions: how were the army reforms fulfilled in conditions characterized by radical political transformation, lack of resources and economic downturn? Can the NATO requirements influence these military reforms? Why is the EU's security and defence policy closer to the security perception of most of the Central Eastern European countries than to the American one?
