Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the electoral deposit – the amount of money a candidate or a campaign committee must pay for the right to stand in elections. Electoral deposit is common in worldwide contemporary election law systems, and applied in more than 80 countries (mainly in presidential and parliamentary elections, rarely in local elections). The electoral deposit is utilized regardless of political regime (i.e. by democratic, authoritarian and totalitarian states). This article starts with the definition of electoral deposit, its aims and mechanisms. The main focus, however, is to describe and analyze different ways of functioning monetary deposits in particular electoral systems (for instance, it gives an overview of rules concerning amount of money required and conditions of the return of the deposit).
