DILEMMAS OF CHOOSING ELECTORAL SYSTEM IN CONTEMPORARY DEMOCRACIES – CONTEXT OF ELECTORAL LAW TO THE POLISH PARLIAMENT

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on analyses of functioning of electoral systems in contemporary democracies from the point of view of optimal choice to the suggestions of changes in electoral law to the Polish Parliament. At first electoral system was defined and its characteristic variables as well as precise typology of majoritarian, proportional and mixed electoral systems was made. Next, preliminary determinants of choosing certain electoral system were indicated. Successive stages of analyse was related to showing advantages and defects of particular electoral systems on the basis of world famous political scientists and Polish researchers. This part of analyse is ended by synthetics divagations concerning dilemmas of choosing optimal electoral system. The last part of the article embraced suggestions of changes in electoral system to the Polish Parliament.
