Summary/Abstract: Smart specialization, which constitutes an important component of smart growth, means cooperation of enterprises, research centres and higher education institutions in order to define the most promising areas of regional specialization profiles, but also the specification of weaknesses preventing innovation implementation and considering differences in economic opportunities of particular regions with reference to innovation. Smart specialization is an example of a complex phenomenon, which results in its quantification and measurement problems. Therefore, the study presents the proposal of the evaluation of the smart growth area in Polish regions by means of fuzzy classification methods. The division of European space into fuzzy classes, using fuzzy c-means method, allowed for the estimation of Polish regions membership levels in the distinguished classes. The due estimations were performed by means of R program application.
