Summary/Abstract: A review of the minimalist opera Einstein on the Beach by Robert Wilson and Philip Glass of 1976, resurrected during this year's MaerzMusik Festival in Berlin. Irmer points out the inevitable differences between the two stagings (resulting from necessary changes in cast), but also stresses the remarkable vitality of the work in spite of the thirty-eight years that have passed since its premiere. The reviewer compares the stage solutions in Einstein with the later productions by Wilson, proposing the thesis that this avant-garde opera holds the essence of his directorial style.
