Summary/Abstract: The article presents main characteristics of transformation of modern cities, particularly in Poland. It describes the changes in the spatial and in socio-cultural environment. For thousands of years the city has been considered as “man’s home”, formed in response to emerging needs and social aspirations, but it is also the environment with the crisis-prone characteristics, exposed to various threats. Critics draw attention to the process of alienation within the modern city, resulting from many features of postmodern reality. At the same time, one can specify different actions for “regaining” the city. The second part of the article is devoted to the presentation of changes of Cracow and the emerging of the new social spaces corresponding to the needs of creative environments.
