Summary/Abstract: Several articles in the last issue of Preporod emphasised that the behaviour of some Serbian and Croatian politicians and dignitaries, Milorad Dodik and Ratko Peric in particular, are in discordance with European tradition of tolerance. This article will attempt to verify the above mentioned statement. European history could be divided into three parts: pagan, dominated by the Greek-Roman civilisation, Christian dominated by the Catholic Church, and secular, until recently dominated by the national states. The pagan Europe was characterised by racial-ethnic and religious tolerance. The Christian Europe espoused racial-ethnic tolerance and religious intolerance. The main feature of a secular Europe is predominant religious tolerance combined with national exclusiveness, which sometimes escalated into racial and ethnic fanaticism. The conclusion of the article is that one should look for examples of racial-ethnic and religious tolerance outside of the main European currents.
