Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the career of Flavius Appalius Illus Trocundes. It lasted nine years (475-484) and was military in character. During that time he achieved the highest position in the early Byzantine army (magister militum praesentalis). The scarcity of information does not allow to state whether he deserved his promotions because of his military talents, or whether they were primarily a result of the influence of his brother Illus, whom he faithfully supported until the end of his days.
