Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the history and etymology of the word szkulepa ‘jade’, ‘old cow’, ‘old, ugly woman’. It exists in the Doroszewski’s dictionary as an old word with no etymology. The author presents the lexicographical history of the word in Polish and reflects on its origin and morphological structure. She explores for this purpose various dictionaries of foreign languages as follows: Russian, Byelorussian and Lithuanian. She confirms that probably related words appear only in Lithuanian. Then she analyses the morphology of the discussed word. Finally, she comes to a conclusion that the word szkulepa comes into existence on the Lithuanian-Byelorussian borderland and makes a hybrid consisting of the Lithuanian lexical morpheme škùl-, which exists in a few Lithuanian words, and the unproductive Byelorussian suffix -ep-a.
