The Concession for Production of Bacon and Other Pork Products (1925-1930)

Summary/Abstract: In 1926 P. A. Ivanoff and P. P. Zelenoff, (Russian emigrants from England), managers of the steamship company The Ornis Steamship Company Ltd. and another firm called Brothers Baerselmann on behalf of the Bulgarian Development Company Limited . London entered into a contract with the Bulgarian government, which granted the right for industrial concession for production of bacon and other pork products for export out of Bulgaria. The business establishment included construction and exploitation of modern refrigerators around the country; establishing and maintaining direct and regular communications between the Bulgarian and the English ports with steamships equipped with refrigerator installations. The concession was given for twenty years. The government placarded its expectations that the concession would transform the Bulgarian agriculture and gave extraordinary privileges to the concessioner, which was met with indignation by important economic and business structures and by members of the parliament both from the opposition and from the ruling party. The government, however, was not able to find partners with good financial potentialities and contracted with concessioners who repeatedly tried to wring financial support from the Bulgarian state. The concessioners could not raise enough funds to develop the enterprise and in the end the concession for production and export of bacon and other pork products turned out to be one of the failures of the economic policy of the government.
