The Gypsy Pilgrimage of Csatka

Summary/Abstract: The present study examines the gypsy pilgrimage of Csatka, Hungary. The Transdanubian pilgrimage is considered the greatest religious gathering of the Hungarian gypsy community, that takes place every year in September. The event is visited by thousands of gypsies from Hungary and its neighbor countries. Because of the sacred, healing water of its fountain and the Marian apparitions experienced here the shrine is very popular among gypsy people. They consider this event a meeting: on one hand they meet the sacred, the Virgin Mary, on the other this is an opportunity to meet other gypsies from the whole country and region in a festive environment. The study also presents the brief history and the main events of the pilgrimage.
