Summary/Abstract: The 20th century as a single war event is central concept of Patočka’s philosophy of history, which is an original fusion of Husserl’s phenomenology and Heidegger’s fundamental ontology. Long lasting decay of European civilization, caused by the decline of philosophy as a tool of self-education and immense penetration of the human world by technicality, resulted in the century of everlasting war. Patočka sees the possibility to flight from the crisis paradoxically in the war itself, because it can help us to restore the equal and responsible society, based on the solidarity of the shaken. The war ravages, but on the other hand it offers liberation.
