Summary/Abstract: The distance between the German population and the new EU member state Romania does not only become manifest in the critical view of this accession but also in a generally negative image of the country. The indifference and this poor evaluation is based on out-dated notions about Romania. In the last five years the Romanian government has attempted to improve the image abroad through information and PR-campaigns, but these have only hesitantly been crowned with success. This situation has had an impact on the course of the EU accession process, furthermore other relationships with foreign countries (economy, tourism) have been coined by these wrong and negative perceptions. This image can mainly be changed through intensive preoccupation with Romania and personal contact, e.g. in form of town twinning but also through the mediating engagement of the emigrated ethnic Germans (e.g. Transylvanian Saxons).
