Summary/Abstract: The case-study presented here is based on a survey that included 261 interviews, representing households in the towns of Zarnesti and Bran, as well as the neighbouring villages of Magura and Pestera, all of them in the district of Brasov (judetul Brasov). The national-park including the nearby massif of the Piatra Craiului mountains (Königstein, Királykö) and some of the settlements studied here, as well as the relatively easy accessibility from big cities (Brasov, Bucharest) makes this region one of the most developed in Romania regarding rural tourism. Still, as the study shows, (private) tourism is relatively underdeveloped, even in Bran, the centre of rural tourism. Main obstacles for private households to engange in tourism are identified in the lack of capital and knowledge.
