Summary/Abstract: The waste phenomenon is a burning problem of all countries on Earth. Great powers invest a lot of money and make great efforts in order to establish a sustainable waste management system. A large number of nongovernmental organizations, regardless of their character, are daily trying to introduce innovations in order to reduce the amount of waste and use it as much as possible as raw material. Bosnia and Herzegovina, due to the war events, was late in starting with the implementation of the legislation regulating the environmental protection, and consequently with the solution of the problem of waste disposal. Since 2000 a well-designed action has been going on, which through the passage of a set of environmental laws and planning documents regulates the area of waste management. The implementation of the laws and strategies is going on slowly, but major breakthroughs are manifest especially in the area of waste management. The basic idea for a lasting solution of the waste problem was the establishment of regional centers for waste management in which waste disposal would be effected from one region, whereas the expansion of the system would reduce the costs and the negative pressure of waste disposal into the environment. One such center has been planned in the Herzegovina/Neretva Canton as well in the area if the City of Mostar. Owing to its favorable geo-traffic position it is an ideal area for the establishment of a center for waste management in the broader area of Herzegovina. This paper brings an overview of possible modules for an efficient waste management in BiH, and brings closer the situation, and puts an emphasis on the waste management in the Herzegovina/Neretva Canton.
