Summary/Abstract: KRASZEWSKI’S SPRAWA KRYMINALNA Summary In Sprawa kryminalna by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski (1872) the plot develops through discovery of the crime and the inquiries proceeding and the investigation is treated as an intellectual puzzle and a challenge for the detective. However, the crime turns out to be a decoy and the criminal plot is subordinated to the romantic and dramatic one. The gossip, its genesis and circulation is one of the subjects of the novel. With this literary joke Kraszewski asserted and transgressed the model of a criminal novel: Sprawa kryminalna is an anti-criminal novel. It is, with Kraszewski, yet another variation on the novel construction of the ambiguous, puzzling and meandering world, susceptible to rational description, but not easily submitting itself to rational understanding and planning.
