Models for Redefining Academic Libraries in a Modern Educational Environment: Towards Information Literacy and Digital Services

Summary/Abstract: The last two decades have been marked by intensive reshaping of the traditional sections of academic libraries and services provided by them, but also of heritage institutions in general, all as a result of major redefining in the wider information-services environment. The range of possible models for delivering services of academic libraries available today stands as proof of the continued successful efforts of academic libraries to keep their services relevant and in demand through the implementation of available information-communication technologies. Efforts on adopting and utilizing digital network technologies aimed at implementing digital services allow libraries to maintain their importance, as well as the interest of the public in library information services in an environment dominated by various non-heritage and commercial information services. The process of apparent, multileveled restructuring of services provided by academic libraries in a redefined and technologically changed educational environment primarily concerns demands for redefined literacy, i.e. information literacy, as well as new, improved digital services. This paper aims at showing how technological developments can be introduced into academic libraries’ practice, i.e. models of digital services that would meet the requirements of users of academic libraries today, but also in the foreseeable future.
