Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the role of academic libraries in the Bologna process and their importance in the implementation of the university ,s function as a place where knowledge is transferred and acquired and where new knowledge is created. Academic libraries are a part of the process of establishing and assuring quality in higher education and scientific research in the Bologna environment. To measure quality of their work, with satisfaction of the end user being the most important criterion, it is necessary to make a series of fundamental changes in order to make them a true communication hub in the wider social and academic community. These changes require standardization and they need to address issues of organisation, financing, structure, staff and content.
