Summary/Abstract: Among about three thousands of those who graduated from the first Russian higher technical institution – St. Petersburg Mining Institute – before 1917, almost one in ten was of Polish origin. The paper deals with two outstanding geologists: professor of the Mining Institute and the Academy of Mining at Krakow, a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences K.I. Bogdanovich (1864–1947) and one of the first uthoritative specialists in drilling G.D. Romanovsky (1830–1906).
