Summary/Abstract: The article, on the basis of Jonas Avyžius’ novel Sodybų tuštėjimo metas and its translation into English The Lost Home (via the Russian language), discusses some aspects of the translation of culturespecific items. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the problems which the translator encountered while rendering culture-specific items from Lithuanian into English and, to some extent, discuss some of the translation strategies employed while translating certain items into English. Following Newmark’s proposed domains in which culture-specific items seem to be most prominent, i.e. ecology, material culture, social culture, organizations etc, we also included into the research (on the basis of the accumulated data) deminutive words because of their high occurence in Lithuanian. Forms of address, proper names and nicknames were also taken into consideration and treated as culture-specific items.
