Summary/Abstract: The foregoing article is devoted to the ways the political authorities of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the local ecclesiastical structures (both the Catholic and the Evangelical Church), and the oppositional circles reacted to the socio-political developments in Poland in the years 1980-1981, i.e. in the period of the so-called first Solidarity. The article also dwells upon both criticism and signs of support voiced from beyond the Oder, when in the early 1980’s the Polish People’s Republic was confronted with a serious crisis and eventual great change.
