Ivan Shishmanov and the West European Literature – the Academic Project

Summary/Abstract: The paper is focused on issues accompanying the effort to rationalize Professor Shishmanov’s contribution to academic research and teaching of West European literature, as well as to the introduction and development of comparative literary studies in Bulgaria. Suggested here is a program for a forthcoming study devoted to the exploration and evaluation of Shishmanov’s activities in the respective field. Achievements of earlier attempts to describe and characterize Shishmanov’s career as a life-long professor of comparative literature and head of the department of General and Comparative literary history at the University of Sofia are taken into consideration. The main goal of the further study is to provide an adequate idea about Shishmanov’s actual impact on the development of comparative literature in Bulgaria. Well beyond the traditional concern with the editing and publishing of his numerous still unpublished lectures procedures involved in the study aim to reconstruct the image of Shishmanov’s academic presence with specific emphasis on the performing aspect of his teaching.
