Summary/Abstract: The term "metaphysical poetry", like the terms "Cavalier poetry" or "Commonwealth literature", is one in the traditional medley of literary-historical labels still in common use in English literary history as designations for narrower segments of English post-Renaissance literary developments. Variable in scope, reference and value implication, the term has nevertheless exerted a considerable influence on the literary-historical classification of English post-Renaissance literature as well as on their literary-historical interpretation. The belated recognition of Baroque features in English post-Renaissance poetry and the slow acceptance of the Baroque concept in the Anglo-American study of English literature can be explained by the emphatic presence of that traditional term. Tracing the history of the name "Metaphysical poetry" as well as the changes of its literary-critical reference, this study attempts to illuminate some of the crucial methodological and terminological misunderstandings and controversies connected with the term, focus ing particularly on those which have had a continued bearing on the understanding and interpretation of English post-Renaissance literature and its relation to major literary developments in other countries of contemporary Europe.
