Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results from a study that focuses on sportsmen during socialism and mainly the ones from the power sports because they are the most frequently mentioned group by researchers to be recruited by organized crime in Bulgaria during the transitional period. The empirical data in the study was collected through a combination of three methods – observation, in-depth interviews and document analysis. The reasons for the active involvement of sportsmen in criminal organizations during the socialist period, their special privileges, their links with power under socialism, the intertwining of their social roles, socialization and personality characteristics of these figures of the transition are examined in the text. The survey results show that sport during socialism emerged as an extension of the repressive apparatus and political power. The power sport sportsman during socialism is built as a specific personality that displays all the traits that make him almost the perfect member of a criminal organization.
