Summary/Abstract: Motivation researchers have emphasized fear of failure, need for achievement, and need for affiliation as energizing agent for human behavior, as determinants of achievement processes and outcomes. Surprisingly, little research has been conducted on the link between of these motives. The present research aimed to: 1. analyze the gender differences and differences among the students with higher grades and those with lower grades in the case of fear of failure, need for achievement, and need for affiliation, and 2. to analyze the relation between the fear of failure, need for achievement, need for affiliation, and the grade average of students. The current study involved 100 subjects, 50 girls (average age 17.02 years), and 50 boys (average age 16.79). The main results indicate the absence of gender difference regarding the fear of failure, but the girls that have a lower overall average show a fear of failure significantly higher than those with a high overall grade average. Girls have a higher need for affiliations, and also a higher need for achievement compared to boys. Negative associations between the fear failure and the need for achievement, need for affiliation, and grade average, between the need for affiliation and the need for achievement are discussed.
