Summary/Abstract: Western esotericism as a clearly circumscribed field of scientific enquiry is a relatively recent achievement. Consequently scholarly debates regarding an academically rigorous definition of esotericism as well as the most pertinent methodological approaches to this domain are far from being settled. This brief study attempts a survey of the most important contributions to this area of research.
