Summary/Abstract: This topic has been well-known to contemporary folkloristics. The present article deals with it on the basis of observations, interviews and recordings (both the author’s own and archival ones), made over the past ten years. Preference is given to the method of comprehensive or thorough documentation. The object of the study, therefore, are not entire population of a village (region, area). This way of recording and studying the phenomenon reveals a more comprehensive picture of the state of folk narratives as a whole, and makes possible the study of the process of their real existence with a view, above all, to the person who creates and performs them, and whose spiritual needs they satisfied and satisfy. In the article this vast task of research is tentatively limited only to the telling of stories by women in present-day Bulgarian villages. The author outlines the contents of women’s folk narrative repertoire, as well as some common features of the woman’s manner of telling folk stories. The observations made reveal the active part women still play in the process of preserving and handing down folk narratives.
